BUFFALO, N.Y. — Monday, April 8th will be a historic day in Western New York, when we're in the path of totality of the solar eclipse. So the team at Big Ditch Brewing wanted to make a beer that would be worthy of the occasion.
"We wanted to do something a little atypical considering how atypical this event was," President and Co-Founder Matt Kahn said. "So we wound up doing a Black IPA, which is actually a dark version of an India Pale Ale."
Kahn says the WNY Eclipse Black IPA features citrus and pine hops with a malty flavor.
"We probably won't ever package another black IPA again, just like you might not see one of these again, so it should fit pretty well," he said.
Every six-pack also comes with a pair of eclipse glasses, courtesy of the Buffalo Museum of Science.
"They've been great partners working with us to do this together, and then developing the packaging, figuring out what the style was and making sure there was interest in selling it," Kahn said. "So it's been months and months of planning this but it should be available on Friday the first of March."
"It's been super exciting working with a lot of organizations, Big Ditch is such an icon so of course it was super great getting our glasses in the boxes, but just getting them out as been fun and exciting," said the science museum's eclipse coordinator, Jennifer Schechter.
The museum will host an eclipse-themed Science After Hours event Friday night to celebrate the beer release.
"It's an adults only 21+ event where you can come, you can drink some amazing Big Ditch beer, but you also get to do some fun eclipse based activities," Schechter said.
You can purchase six packs of WNY Eclipse at Big Ditch's taproom on East Huron Street in Buffalo as well as local retail stores.
