BUFFALO, N.Y. — If you have ever thought about bringing some of the world's most famous works of art to life, now is your chance.
You can sign-up to be part of Art Alive at the Buffalo AKG this fall.
"We invite members of the community to create living representations of famous artworks for prizes. This year, we're handing out over four-thousand dollars in prizes to the winners of these tableaux," said Charlie Garling, Delaware North Director of Learning and Creativity at the Buffalo AKG.
The 28th annual Art Alive event on the Great Lawn at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum is being held on October 19.
"The Great Lawn is going to be absolutely full of living representations of artwork from the Buffalo AKG's collection. There's going to be music. There's going to be prizes. It's going to be a fantastic time," said Charlie Garling.
Charlie Garling is the Delaware North Director of Learning and Creativity at the Buffalo AKG. He says the living representations of the museum's artwork, often called tableaux, can be made from people, props, and backdrops. In the past, they've been super creative.
"You would be amazed at how much work, and dedication, and time is put into creating these replicas, and some people out here for a couple hours, and they're interacting with the visitors that are coming by. They're interacting with other participants. They're interacting with the judges. There's going to be a series of different categories such as best craftsmanship and most creative. And of course, people can come and vote for their people's choice award," said Charlie Garling.
He encourages teachers to see if their students want to join the competition because there are categories just for them. Judges will pick the Judges' Choice, Best Craftsmanship, and Most Creative Entry in these categories - School Groups Grades K–8, School Groups Grades 9–12, Individual Adults, Individual Kids and Teens, and Households/Community Groups.
"Kids are going back to school, and this is a wonderful competition for individuals, for community groups, for classes, for families, and we even have a special category this year about our Marisol Exhibition which is right here in the Gundlach Building," said Charlie Garling.
You can sign-up from now through September 20. The competition is from 12 p.m. until 2 in the afternoon on October 19.
"Please go to BuffaloAKG.org. You can find some inspiration by looking at our collection, and also you can sign-up. This year, not only are we handing out amazing prizes, but this is going to be a great event for everyone to come and enjoy," said Charlie Garling.
