Melissa McCarthy talks to Evening about her role in Ghostbusters, in theaters July 14.

SEATTLE – Over the past five years, Melissa McCarthy has starred in some of Hollywood's biggest comedies.

But Ghostbusters has extra meaning for the mother of two.

"I have a 6 and a 9-year-old, and I am so excited. It's the first movie I get to take them to that I'm in,” she said.

“How old will they be before they see Spy?” asked reporter Kim Holcomb.

“42,” McCarthy answered.

In Ghostbusters, she plays a resolute, strong-willed scientist.

The new version of the classic movie modernizes the story and has a completely different plot.

But it also honors the original, with recognizable gadgets, returning characters, and the certainty that the new busters ain't afraid of no ghosts.

"What are you afraid of?" Holcomb asked.

"I am afraid of rodents,” McCarthy said. "If there's a spider in the house, I go and get it and put it outside. If there was a mouse or a rat, I would just burn the house to the foundation and leave.”

"When they start their ghostbusting business, it's a little bit of a leap of faith. What was, in your own life, something you consider a leap of faith?” Holcomb asked.

“A leap of faith is, I'm an actor,” McCarthy answered. "I moved to New York City to finish college at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology,) did standup my second night there, then said, ‘I'm going to go a different direction.’ I changed everything. And then, a mere 21 years later, I got my first job… I knew I loved it. And I think when you really love something, if you work hard enough and you don't have specific expectations, I think it's always worth it."

Ghostbusters is rated PG-13 and opens July 14.
