Even a frigid fall day won't keep Greenard Poles from missing his weekly shopping trip at the mobile farm market at Westminster Community House in Buffalo.
"The kind of things they have here is as good as as anywhere else, but it's local, it's in the community, at the community house," Poles said.
Mr. Poles has worked at the center since 1980.
"There's things that they get here that they can really cook and work with," he said about the neighbors and residents.
The farm market truck stops at Westminster every Tuesday, bringing fresh and affordable produce.
"I shop and have a couple of bags that we'll deliver later on," Mr. Poles said. He shops for people who can't make it here themselves.
"One to North Buffalo, and the two seniors that live in another facility," he explained.
For almost three years now, Feedmore Western New York's Farm Market has helped get more healthy food to more people.
"We have two operating on the road currently, we have 3 total," Public Relations Manager Catherine Shick said. "We're hoping to continue to grow this program, we have continued to grow it."
Anyone can shop at the truck. They take cash, credit, snap, and double up food bucks.
"I got pears, I got grapes, potatoes, broccoli, green beans," one happy customer said.
The farm market operates year round, building a sense of community at every stop.
"One of the things that I think is great is when we started out two years ago, the truck came and they had certain things on there, and then the people that were shopping from the truck indicated what they would like to see and things they cook a lot," CEO Chandra Redfern of the Buffalo Federation of Neighborhood Centers said. "We were really pleased to see that the truck listened, and they brought those things back out here to the community for individuals to purchase."
Just ask Mr. Poles, who has fulfilled many of those special requests.
"They were telling me on the phone what to get, no get two of those, and one of those. Oh they have that today, okay," Poles said.
