BUFFALO, N.Y. — Local zinesters are invited to show their creations at ZineFest this year.
Hosted by WNY Book Arts and Just Buffalo Literary Center, zine-makers can share their works starting on August 18 from noon to 5 p.m. located at 468 Washington St in the City of Buffalo.
What is a zine?
Organizers say it “defies definition,” but is related to “handmade, self-published, DIY, underground, cheap, hyperlocal, radical, queer, feminist, photocopied, misspelled,” stated organizers.
More simply, a zine is a self-published magazine-like work.
“Inside a zine you might find poems, comics, manifestos, recipes, collages, gardening advice, lyrics, & handy tips for your neighborhood activist,” organizers noted.
Attendees can connect with artists at the zine pop-up library, read local classics, as well as sell and trade zines.
The event is free and open to all.
Organizer of ZineFest and Writing Center Director at Just Buffalo Literary Center Robin Jordan adds that it is important to recognize local artists.
"Zines are such a crucial form of publishing: the immediacy, the lack of gatekeepers, the low costs, the hyperlocal, the genre-expansiveness,” she stated. “I'm so thrilled that Just Buffalo & Book Arts found a way to provide zinesters with this moment to celebrate our local zine culture and its history."
Vendor tables are unreserved, and organizers ask that at least 75% printed material is in the table display. More information on the event, including reserving tables can be found by clicking here.
