41st annual 'Curtain Up!' celebration

13 shows opened Friday night throughout the theatre district as a part of the 'Curtain Up!' celebration

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The 41st annual Curtain Up! celebration kicked off the theater season in Downtown Buffalo. 

Beginning with a cocktail party at Sheas Wonder Theater, complete with a band, food and drinks, and a cabaret show. 13 shows opened as a part of the celebration. 

President of Sheas, Brian Higgins was excited to welcome theatergoers back. 

Higgins said, "That's why we are here, to present to the people of Western New York with a beautiful surrounding, and a history that everyone can be proud of."

There were shows at all three Shea's locations, providing a kickoff for their 2024-2025 series of Broadway shows coming to Buffalo in a few short weeks. "Lion King, Hamilton a number of other shows that are part of our season ticket package. so we are just really excited about this theater season," Higgins said. 

Shows start at 7:30 pm, and afterward at 10 when all the shows were let out, there was a party on the street complete with food and drinks and plenty of entertainment. 

Higgins said his favorite part of the theater season is watching people experience live theater. 

Higgins said,  "When people come into this space they're transformed. and its families, its grandparents with grandkids, its parents with their kids its friends and everyone is in the same emotional state, everyone's in a very good place."
