Tom Hanks is mourning the loss of his mother, Janet Marylyn Frager, who the actor revealed died on Tuesday at 84 years old.
"This beauty? My mom. She was the difference in many lives," the actor wrote in a heartfelt rememberance on Instagram. "Many lives. We say goodbye to her today. Safe crossing, mom"

Hanks' wife, Rita Wilson, also shared a kind message to Instagram, writing, "This wonderful lady gave birth to my husband, and three other children. Thank you for bringing my love into the world. She is at peace now."

Hanks was accompanied by Janet to the 1995 Academy Awards -- where he won his first Oscar for the film, Philadelphia -- and the actor opened up to ET about the importance having the support of his mother and family.
"It's a personal moment, you know?" the actor shared of experiencing the awards show with his loved ones. "My kids are up there in the balcony, and my mom is sitting down there next to me, and you just see much more than just the industry and the individual movie."
Over the weekend, Hanks celebrated his 60th birthday.
