BUFFALO, N.Y. — Award Winning Investigative Journalist Charlie Specht is joining WGRZ, 2 On Your Side as the station’s new Investigative Multi-Skilled Journalist.
In an announcement to the staff, News Director Jeremy Settle wrote, “Charlie is a local guy who understands our community through and through. He is a natural fit for our team, aligning perfectly with the On Your Side brand. Charlie believes in our mission as well as ensuring that Channel 2 is a great place to work, by bringing a positive attitude and a commitment to excellence.”
A graduate of Saint Bonaventure University, Charlie comes to WGRZ from the Buffalo News. He also spent five years at the local ABC affiliate as an investigative reporter.
His reporting on the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo child abuse scandal prompted the New York State Legislature to pass the Child Victims Act, which reformed New York’s sexual abuse laws.
“To have an investigative journalist of Charlie’s caliber and accomplishments join our team is outstanding,” said WGRZ President & General Manager Mark Manders. “He lives the 2 On Your Side brand and does not shy away from asking the tough questions or holding the powerful accountable. His past work speaks volumes and has contributed to positive change throughout the region. We are so excited to see the excellent work that Charlie will do on behalf of Western New York.”
Specht is the only journalist in Western New York awarded the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Silver Baton, considered the Pulitzer Prize for broadcast reporting.
