NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Aquarium of Niagara has a weatherman of their own, but he's a little slipperier than our Storm Team 2 here at WGRZ.
Stryker the harbor seal has a knack for winter weather. He and at the Aquarium hangout in their outdoor enclosure all throughout the chilly months here in WNY.
This is the fourth year in a row that the Aquarium and Stryker gave a winter weather outlook.
Going 3 for 3 so far, the harbor seal has been on a roll with his predictions, and this year when it came down to either a cold or frigid winter it was unsure what the decision from Stryker would be.
It was any seal's guess but ultimately it was predicted that we will have a cold winter a head here in WNY.
Many may be wondering though what is the difference between cold and frigid?
According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary: Cold is an uncomfortably low temperature for humans, whereas frigid is intensely cold.
Regardless, it sounds like it's time to break out the winter jackets, and get ready to embrace the snow.
"We are seeing changes in our climate, and that's why the Aquarium has made a purposeful shift in the way we are engaging our community on this important topic, said Gary Siddall, president & CEO of the Aquarium of Niagara. “In addition to this annual event, we've devoted an entire section of our public gallery to animals and ecosystems that are most impacted by rising temperatures in our oceans. We hope that guests will develop a better understanding of how our choices impact animals in their natural environment and commit to taking action to make a difference.”
Joining in the fun 3rd graders from Harry F. Abate Elementary School gathered around the seal enclosure to cheer on Stryker while he made his big prediction. The students afterwards got to explore the Aquarium for STEM and weather-related activities.
