Buffalo, NY — Something that's very neat and doesn't happen often is the creation of snow rollers. And it just happened in Wheatfield on Wednesday.
Sher Losel sent in video of snow rollers there. These are naturally made snow balls. They form as chunks of snow are blown along the ground by the wind, picking up more snow as they roll. Kind of like when you're trying to make a snowman.
It's a rare weather phenomenon that happens in just the right conditions. There must be a thin surface layer of wet, loose snow and some ice or powder snow under it. And then the wind needs to be just strong enough to move the snow rollers, but not too strong to break them apart. The size can range from smaller than a tennis ball up to a car in size!
