Learning about Alzheimer's in an easier and more comfortable way

The “living with early stage dementia or memory loss" classes are an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the disease, early on.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Learning about Alzheimer's especially when it affects a loved one can be difficult but the Western New York Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association is hoping they can help with that. 

The WNY Alzheimer's Association is holding a three-part educational series for people who have been diagnosed with early stage memory less, dementia or mild cognitive impairment.

Classes are free to attend, and will be held on January 11, 18 and 25 at the offices of the WNY Chapter of Alzheimer's Association located at 6400 Sheridan Dr. in Suite 320 in Amherst from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

“This three-part series will allow people to ask questions, learn more about their diagnosis and symptoms, and discover the many resources available to them, in a comfortable and confidential setting,” program Coordinator at the WNY Alzheimer's Association, Maggie Concannon, said.

Topics in the classes will include

  • coping with changes and a new diagnosis
  • how to share this diagnosis with family and friends
  • communication techniques
  • disease education and disease progression
  • legal and financial information
  • safety topics
  • discussing routine and how to live a fulfilling life with your diagnosis
  • what supports and resources are available
