Lancaster School Board terminates school physician

This decision comes after Trista Blasz, 12, a female student, was told she couldn't wrestle for the junior varsity wrestling team.

LANCASTER, N.Y. — In a special meeting Saturday morning the Lancaster School Board voted to terminate the district's chief medical officer and end their contract with Lancaster Depew Pediatrics.

This comes after Trista Blasz, 12, a female student, was told she couldn't wrestle for the junior varsity wrestling team.

The school board unanimously voted to terminate the doctor that denied Trista's request.

"Absolutely she's capable," said Danielle Blasz, Trista's mother. "She's won two national championships. She wrestles boys. She took second in state boys."

The board says while they can't overrule the decision, they can decide who sits on the panel.

The school board president Patrick Uhteg said, "I have a daughter myself, whether I did or not though, girls can do anything boys can do. They should be told that and they should be encouraged to do that and then when they succeed as Trista clearly has thus far, they should be celebrated and congratulated and we should be moving forward and not back."

Trista's mom Danielle told 2 on Your Side, "I just hope that we put this to an end for female wrestlers for Lancaster. They should not have to go through what Trista and I had to deal with for four months."

Danielle is cautiously optimistic Trista will be able to join the team this season, even though practice started a few weeks ago.

"I'm hopeful. I'm not gonna give up. I'm gonna keep fighting for her," she said.

The family is also still considering legal action.
