BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 15-page Audit into the Town Of Evans released by the New York State comptroller says that Mary Hosler, the Erie County deputy comptroller for audits, allowed more than two dozen employees of the town to record thousands of hours of leave time incorrectly in the towns payroll system.
The report also went on to say that while she was supervisor, more than $11,000 in inaccurate or unsupported separation payments were made.
Republicans in the Erie County Legislature and Republican Assemblyman David DiPietro are calling on Erie County Comptroller Kevin Hardwick to act.
In a letter sent to Hardwick, the Republican caucus of the county legislature said, "The findings in this report force us to consider and question whether she is the right person for this responsibility in Erie county government at this time."
In a news release, Assemblyman DiPietro said, "If it is true that Ms. Hosler established practices where she defrauded taxpayers for personal profit, then she has no business being at the controls of Erie county finances and audits."
Hardwick says he is confident in Hosler's abilities working in his office and praises her work when she was town supervisor, he also said he does not want to get in the way of the auditors doing their work.
"I thought she did a fantastic job out there," Hardwick said. "She took over when the town was on the verge of fiscal disaster, and I think most people would say that she turned the town around, and she got elected there by the voters twice."
Assemblyman DiPietro is calling on Hardwick to have an independent auditor come in to investigate Hosler's work.
"Done, we are in the process of doing that already," Hardwick said. "Every three years we do a peer review by an independent auditor. We have already contracted with an auditor to come in, they are looking over the audits, they still have yet to come talk to us and do some field work, and later this year we will have their findings."
