BUFFALO, N.Y. — More news of closings and mergers continues to come out after the Diocese of Buffalo recommended that 34% of their parishes combine so they could sell the closed properties.
On Thursday night recommendations from the Diocese were given to the North Buffalo church parish of St. Mark which is located on Woodward Avenue saying that they should merge with a nearby parish, the St. Margaret Church located on Hertel Avenue.
In a press release from the St. Mark School, they wrote "St. Mark School will remain open as a parish school for the Catholic Community of Buffalo, North. Under the Diocesan recommendation, the parish property will still house St. Mark school and adaptive reuse of the church and rectory for school purposes can now take place."
They also noted that "St. Mark School has had consistently high enrollment each year with 350-400 enrolled students and remains a strong Catholic School in North Buffalo for grades Pre-K through 8."
St. Mark's has noted that the recommendation from the Diocese will be reviewed by the parish and that they have until July 15 to offer a counter proposal back to the Diocese.
