Cheektowaga residents want answers on flooding

Some people lost precious belongings.

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY - For the third-straight day, people in one Cheektowaga neighborhood spent the day cleaning up from flood damage.

On Towers Boulevard and West Toulon Drive in Cheektowaga, from afar it may look like a lot of garage sales are going on. But no, these folks are cleaning up and airing out flooded basements. Some people lost precious belongings.

"I think we lost pretty much everything, we had down here a lot of memories family photos. All my kids' stuff from when they were babies, stuff that can't be replaced," Tara Bukowski said.

For others, it's deja vu.

"Two times in a year, they got to do something to manage this," Nicolas Krawczyk said.

He said he had nearly four feet of water in his basement, which destroyed his hot water tank, furniture, and appliances. On Monday, 2 On Your Side spoke to Cheektowaga's supervisor and highway superintendent.

REPORTER: Was this something that could've been prevented or was it just too much water?

"It was a lot of water that came down quick," said Mark Wegner, the Cheektowaga Highway Superintendent. "I would say it was going to happen."

At the Buffalo airport weather station, the closest reading to this area of Cheektowaga, between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Saturday about half of an inch fell. Between midnight and 4 a.m. Saturday, nearly an inch of rain fell. Wegner said sewer and sanitation lines backed up. Cheektowaga supervisor Diane Benczkowski said the exact same streets flooded back in 2003, but flooding has been reported more frequently from others.

REPORTER: Wy did this particular area get, the worst of it?

"That's what we're going to be looking into with the engineering department," Wegner said.

Because of the flooding, the town had a bulk pickup Monday. Another bulk pickup will be held sometime before Friday. Supervisor Benczkowski said an informational meeting for residents will be held within a week, to learn more about what happened. But, there is a lot of concern from people in that neighborhood, because more rain is on the way Tuesday.
