CAROVA, N.C. (WVEC) -- Authorities identified a 5-year-old boy who was killed after he was struck by lightning on an Outer Banks beach Sunday afternoon.
13News Now has learned 5-year-old Stephen Little and his family were vacationing from Philadelphia. The family was trying to get out of a storm and into their SUV when the boy, who was standing outside the vehicle, was struck by the lightning bolt.
Chief Ralph Melton with Currituck County Fire-EMS said the department received a call about the lightning strike at 4:11 p.m.
Family members took the child into the SUV after he was hit and they began driving south on the beach. Rescue personnel met the family about a mile north of a rental property called "The Laughing Gull."
The boy was transported to Sentara Princess Anne Hospital in Virginia Beach, where he died.
