BUFFALO, N.Y. β Did you know that March 14 is World Kidney Day? Well, if not, now you do, and here's what to know.
The worldwide day is an opportunity to raise awareness for the importance of kidney's, and how they affect our overall health.
According to the WorldWideKidneyDay.org website "World Kidney Day is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations β World Kidney Alliance (IFKF-WKA)."
Buffalo also has some of its very own groups bringing awareness to both kidney health and organ donation.
The Kidney Foundation of Western New York was first created in 2015, when the founders felt the need to bring more community awareness and patient support to the Buffalo area.
"For people with kidney disease, our role includes patient support and advocacy, offering information on health care options, and assisting with emergency financial, nutritional or transportation needs," the Kidney Foundation said.
Many local organizations work alongside the Kidney Foundation of WNY, as well, such as ConnectLife, the Blood and Organ Donor Network for WNY, and more.
"An estimated 15% of American adults have chronic kidney disease, but most donβt even know they have it. One third of the population is at risk for chronic kidney disease, due primarily to high blood pressure and diabetes." according to the Kidney Foundation of WNY's website.
The foundation also offers free screenings for those to get early detection of possible kidney disease, and support.
Screenings include a health history review, blood pressure test, body mas index calculation, blood glucose test urinalysis, consultation with a healthcare professional, and take-home materials.
