BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Police have released the name of a man shot and killed outside a North Buffalo bar Tuesday.
According to Buffalo Police Chief of Detectives Craig Macy, 46-year-old Madjid Elbert of Buffalo died at ECMC, after he was shot once outside Del Denby Tavern just after 1:00 a.m.
Police identified the victim one day after city officials shut down the bar.
The notice of closure was posted Tuesday afternoon against the Del Denby Tavern approximately 15 hours after Elbert was shot and killed on the patio outside the establishment at 1553 Hertel Avenue. The notice cited the tavern was being closed "in preservation of peace and good order."
Macy said Elbert and the alleged shooter were known to each other, and were together inside the bar when an argument erupted, followed by a physical altercation, and then gunfire outside.
"I would say to the community that these situations, as we've seen, can happen anywhere. The one big takeaway is that they were known to each other. This is not a random act," said Macy.
Macy also said there had been problems at the bar before.
"There is a previous shooting there (in 2021) and we've had calls for shots fired. There's also been fights and things of that nature," Macy said.
"That's not our crowd," insisted bar owner John Daly, who expressed condolences to the shooting victim's family. "This should this in no way reflects on Del's and so many people are already looking at it like its our fault and it really isn't. There's gun violence everywhere and it's a shame. People need to respect each other, respect life, and love each other. It's not that hard. This was terrible and it was senseless."
"It's incumbent on them to protect their patrons," said Macy, who confirmed there is a lot of digital evidence that has been recovered from the phones of individuals at the scene, nearby businesses, and a city operated camera at the corner near Parkside Avenue.
Police are also interviewing witnesses who were coming out of the bar at the time.
