ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills rookie pass rusher Javon Solomon can’t wait to say hello to his new teammate, Von Miller.
“He hasn’t showed up yet, but as soon as he does, I’ll be the first one to,” Solomon said.
Big Von, as Solomon calls Miller, is now being joined by little Von on the Bills defensive line.
Buffalo selected Solomon out of Troy in this year’s NFL Draft. Despite leading the FBS in sacks with 16 last season, the 6-foot-1 edge rusher waited until the fifth round to hear his name called.
"The undersized thing is a visual cue, but what you do from a physical standpoint is a whole different thing," Solomon said.
"So I’m going to go out there and do my best and there’s plenty of guys that have been successful. (Elvis) Dumervil… just undersized guys that go out there and kill it. So that’s the plan, just go in there and step it up."
Something that immediately stood out to Solomon was the pace of his first Bills practice.
"Very quick," Solomon said. "It’s nonstop until coach calls us up, so it's constant movement, but it’s something you get accustomed to real quick."
Rookie minicamp marked Solomon’s first time on the field at One Bills Drive following a long pre-draft and draft process. Now Solomon is happy to have that experience over with and is excited to be rocking a Bills helmet.
"This is the moment I’ve been waiting on," Solomon said.
"God truly blessed me like I said, I was drafted and I’m here. I’m here now, just doing the football stuff. All the combine, all the interview preps. All of that’s behind me now, and at the end of the day, Javon Solomon is a football player."
Solomon is now ready to continue showing that as the offseason progresses.
“I’m glad to be out here doing what I do, doing what I love and God gave me a blessing that I’m good at it, so just going to keep on rolling," he said.
Solomon and the rest of the Bills will begin OTAs in less than two weeks on May 20 at One Bills Drive.
