PITTSFORD, N.Y. — Bills training camp isn’t anything new for defensive coordinator Bobby Babich. However, this year, his role looks a little different than it has in the past.
“I'm usually in meetings, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, everything's back to back where there's a little bit more planning time and those types of things and I'm like okay, what do I have next here?” Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich said.
Babich joined the Bills coaching staff in 2017 initially working with the defensive backs and linebackers before receiving his promotion this offseason, where he was officially named the team’s defensive coordinator.
Despite not being as hands on with specific positions as he was in the past, Babich is still finding the time to interact with his players individually.
“I love being in the mud with these guys,” Babich said. “I love the individual. The guys will tell you it's my favorite part of practice. I think that's where you can do the most growth and it sets you up for the rest of practice.”
His players will also tell you how much his on-field presence and youthful energy has been consistent regardless of his new title.
“He's very passionate about the game and he's bringing energy every single day,” Bills cornerback Taron Johnson said. “I feel like that's what we need consistently and I feel like that will help us make more plays. Obviously he knows the game to me better than anyone I know so that alone I feel is going to help us.”
Although there still has yet to be a final decision made on who will be calling the defensive plays this fall, Babich’s goals for this team remain the same.
“I want to be there for our staff and our players and try to figure out the best way I can do that and to be a servant to them,” Babich said. “I'm trying to find those little niches and holes I can find to get in there and help them.”
The Bills have the day off on Saturday and will continue with camp on Sunday at 9:45 a.m.
