Small airplane crashes at LeRoy Airport

The pilot and the three passengers were taken to the Strong Memorial Hospital and are expected to be okay.

LEROY, N.Y. — Four people were injured in an airplane crash at the LeRoy Airport around 3 p.m. Sunday, according to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office.

A pilot from Canandaigua, John Yates, 48, was on his way back home with his wife and two kids — in a small fixed wing single engine Beech airplane — when the crash happened. Police say the plane failed to take off and struck an embankment at the airport.

The pilot and the three passengers were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and are expected to be okay. On the other hand, the plane sustained severe damage.

The airport closed briefly Sunday afternoon, but opened back up Sunday evening.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this time. The crash is currently under investigation by the Genesee County Sheriff's Office and the Federal Aviation Administration.
