More concerns about CSX rail crossings in WNY

Since the airing of our report on hazardous CSX rail crossings in Niagara Falls, people have told us about other problematic CSX crossings.

TONAWANDA, NY - We're continuing to look at the issue of dangerous railroad tracks around Western New York, and the toll they take on cars. On Monday night, we told you about deteriorating CSX rail lines in Niagara Falls that are expected to be removed or fixed within a week.

Since the airing of that report, people have told us about other hazardous CSX crossings.

The CSX tracks on and near Hyde Park Boulevard in the Falls have pieces that are loose and even pieces of steel sticking out. One rail line is in operation -- several of them aren't used.

And, Niagara Falls council member Kenny Tompkins says the city, state and CSX have agreed to repair them or replace them.

"By the end of the week, all approvals everything should be done we should be able to start by the end of the week early next week," Tompkins said.

Drivers have told us about other dangerous CSX rail crossings that are in operation - like the one at Kenmore Avenue and Sheridan Drive in Tonawanda. There's a big pothole there. About 6,000 drivers use this road every day.

More than four times as many drive past Niagara Falls Boulevard and Shawnee Road in North Tonawanda, where one viewer told us she'd like to see this crossing made smoother.

2 On Your Side called both North Tonawanda's Mayor Arthur Pappas, and Tonawanda's town supervisor Joseph Emminger, to see what local officials could do to fix these crossings.

The Town of Tonawanda engineer was the only one who called us back, saying the State Department of Transportation has jurisdiction over the road.

The state DOT responded to our request saying CSX is in charge of rail crossing maintenance. The DOT said in a statement that it had informed CSX about rail crossing complaints in the Tonawandas.

CSX has not given us an on-the-record comment regarding the project in Niagara Falls, or acknowledged the concerns drivers have of other rail crossings.
