First Honor Flight returns home

Dozens of local veterans and their families returned home on Sunday.

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y.— Dozens of local veterans and their families returned home Sunday morning from the Honor Flight's first trip of the 2018 season, after a delay due to weather.

Fifty servicemen and women from World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars were able to fly for free down to Washington, D.C. for the day, to experience our nation's capitol and visit the monuments for those wars. .

Their flight back home on Saturday night had been canceled with the ice storm but the staff of a Sheraton Hotel in DC stepped up to held find rooms for them.

Back in Western New York, Niagara Falls, The Peace Bridge, The Electric Tower, and Buffalo City Hall were all lit in red, white and blue in honor of the heroes.

Organizers credit the Buffalo Bills and M&T Bank Foundations with helping to host this flight for the veterans. Escorts included Bills players Ryan Groy and Dion Dawkins and M&T bank employees.

It's estimated that it cost more than $40,000 for each Honor Flight mission. If you would like to donate or find out more you can check out the organization at http://www.buffaloniagarahonorflight.org/
