NORTH BOSTON, NY - A devastating fire left a barn destroyed Saturday morning, and a North Boston maple farmer unable to open up for Maple Festival weekend.
The call came in around 10:30 p.m. Friday, with 13 different agencies responding to the fire at Smith's Maple Farm, according to Gene Wieckowski, Chief of North Boston Fire Company.
When fire crews arrived at the scene, the barn was engulfed in flames.
One pig reportedly died in the blaze, although they were able to evacuate a number of other animals from the barn.
Crews say they managed to contain the fire in time, saving a nearby house and shack where maple syrup is produced and stored.
Erie County deputies are now helping find the cause of the fire.
