LOCKPORT, N.Y. — Fire crews in Niagara County responded to the scene of a working fire at an apartment complex in Lockport Monday afternoon. The call came in around 3:30 p.m. for a building located on Robinson Road.
Thirteen people lived in the apartment building — they all made it out — but two people were taken to ECMC because they jumped from a third story window to avoid the smoke and flames. Aaron Bair, deputy chief of the Rapids Fire Department, said although everyone made it out, two cats are still missing.
Bair said there is a million dollars worth of damage to the apartment building.
He also told 2 On Your Side that the two individuals who were taken to ECMC suffered smoke inhalation and an ankle injury.
As a result of the incident, route 93 was closed in both directions between Beattie Avenue and Snyder Drive until 7 p.m.
The deputy fire chief said the fire spread very quickly, but firefighters were able to knock it down within an hour. He said no firefighters were hurt.
The American Red Cross is assisting all 13 people with finding alternative housing.
