LOCKPORT, N.Y. — One person died in a house fire in the City of Lockport on Tuesday night.
The fire had began on the second floor of the Crosby Avenue house where officials say that a victim was trapped. It could be seen when firefighters arrived that fire venting was visible from the first floor window on the south side of the house.
A rescue crew had been immediately deployed in an attempt to get to the victim on the second floor via a ladder. Heavy fire conditions would now allow entry, and hoses were used, along with breaking windows.
Firefighters unfortunately were unable to get to the victim in time as conditions were too dangerous for crews to enter the home. It was noted that after flames had been calmed down that the staircase inside the home had completely burned away.
There were also several dogs inside the home, and only one was recovered already deceased.
Hose lines operated for approximately an hour to bring the fire under control. Crews operated for a total of approximately five hours on the scene.
Minor injuries were reported from two fire fighters who remained on duty during the incident.
The cause of the fire is being reported as what investigators believe to have been a wood pellet stove near the base of a staircase in the house. It is believed to have been what ignited the flames.
Damages are estimated to be around $40,000 in property, and $20,000 in contents.
