BUFFALO, NY-- On Thursday, Football Hall of Fame quarterback and former Buffalo Bill Jim Kelly announced his cancer had returned.
Kelly was first diagnosed with cancer in 2013. He had been cancer-free since September 2014, but was going for testing every six months.
Kelly spoke to 2 On Your Side's Scott Levin Friday via telephone about his diagnosis and treatment.
Kelly says his daughter Erin and physician, Dr. Maureen Sullivan insisted he have a biopsy a couple weeks ago. He said he had to be talked into it.
Kelly will have surgery in New York City at the end of March. Doctors will reconstruct his upper jaw using part of his fibula and blood vessels from his leg. The surgery will close a large interior hole in his jaw where it was operated on a few years ago.
Doctors told Kelly that his quality of life will be better following the reconstruction surgery.
