Former Town of Tonawanda employee pleads guilty to crashing street sweeper

The former Town Of Tonawanda Highway Department employee has since been terminated and has had his license revoked.

TONAWANDA, N.Y. — A Town of Tonawanda employee pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of Driving While Ability Impaired for an incident that happened in April 2023.

Rodger D. Murphy, 54, was driving the Town of Tonawanda street sweeper on the I-290 westbound when he had caused the vehicle to crash near the Colvin Boulevard exit.

At the scene of the crash, investigators say they had found a single prescription painkiller inside the vehicle.

Murphy was placed on administrative leave following the accident, and his employment with the Highway Department was later terminated. His license has also been revoked.
